Apple Chips

Two of my favorite kitchen tools are my Oxo mandoline and my Nesco food dehydrator.  You can make homemade fruit leather, jerky, banana chips, plantain chips, zucchini or squash chips and many other yummy, long lasting treats.

You can use any type of firm organic apple you prefer. I have been using organic red delicious because I can get a 15 pound bag at Costco for 13.99. The apples are large, firm and mildly sweet. I get four one gallon bags out of the 15 pounds.

The process is quick and easy. First, wash and dry the apples.  Using a protective glove, slice the apples to 1/8 inch thickness and place them on the tray. Dry the apples at a 135 degrees for 12 to 18 hours. I prefer to dry the apples longer for a crispy, chip-like texture.

Enjoy the apples plain or combine with toasted coconut chips and crispy nuts for a low cost, healthy paleo friendly snack to take on the go.
